Attack on Argentine president’s car
Protesters stormed a minibus carrying Argentine President Alberto Fernandez. The incident took place outside a community center in Patagonia, in the southern province of Chubut.
The BBC reports on Sunday that the Argentine president visited an area affected by the fire. One person was killed and several others were injured in the blaze. However, the protests took place in protest of the government's plan to reopen the mining project in Chubut province. Protesters pelted the minibus carrying the president with stones. The window glass of the minibus was broken. Protesters tried to stop the minibus.
According to Argentina's Clarin newspaper, protesters are protesting against a government proposal to allow large-scale projects in the gold, silver, and uranium-rich region. Crowds can be seen at the entrance to the community center in various footage of the attack.
The protesters chased the president as he got out of the community center in a minibus. Then he started kicking and punching the minibus. Stones are thrown at the windows. Protesters tried to stop the minibus. Several window panes were broken when the minibus left.
There have been several wildfires in the Patagonia region recently. The blaze destroyed at least 200 homes. People have been evacuated from the area. Due to the fire, the power supply to several areas has been cut off. Many areas do not have a water supply.
The cause of the fire is not yet known. Argentina's interior ministry says it thinks the incident was planned.
