AL leader 'shot dead' in Natore

A local leader of the ruling Awami League was shot dead allegedly by miscreants at Gopalpur municipality under Lalpur upazila in Natore district on Tuesday night.

Slain Manzur Rahman Manju, 45, from the upazila’s Bahadipur village, was vice president of Awami League’s Gopalpur municipality unit and former acting president of the North Bengal Sugar Mill Workers Employees Union.

Lalpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Nasim Ahmed confirmed the matter.

He said four to five miscreants riding on motorbikes stopped in front of a shop in Azimpur Rail Station and fired in the head and stomach of Manjur around 11pm, leaving him dead on the spot.

On information, police rushed to the spot and recovered the body, he said, adding that they launched a drive to arrest the killers.

Police recovered the body and sent it to the Natore Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy on Wednesday morning, the OC added.
