3000 acres of land benefited from the re-excavation of two canals

Kazipara canal of Chandina upazila and Kanail canal of Chauddagram upazila of Comilla have been re-excavated. Three thousand acres of crop land is smiling at this. About two thousand farming families will benefit.

According to local farmers and BADC sources, BADC Comilla has dug three and a half kilometers of Kazipara canal in Chandina and four kilometers of Kanai canal in Chauddagram. About two thousand acres of crops will be saved by drainage of water in the monsoon season and removal of waterlogging caused by floods. Moreover, the water stored in the canal can be used for irrigation in the dry season. Meanwhile, Kanail canal is named after Kanail canal on the west side of Lalapur bridge of Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Gholpasha union of Chauddagram upazila. Excavation of the canal will save about one thousand acres of crops.

It is known from the Barera area of Surajmin Chandina that Kaziparakhal was filled up as it had not been excavated for ages. Many people used to cultivate paddy there. Many lands remain uncultivated due to water crisis and waterlogging. At one time paddy was cultivated. Now that the excavation is over, water has come into the canal. Farmers are happily fetching water from the canal and feeding paddy and vegetables.

Rabiullah of Goramara village in Chandina, Saiful Islam and Kamal Hossain of Chhatiani area of Chauddagram said the canals were almost dead. The jams on the side were sometimes waterlogged and sometimes water was empty. They also demanded excavation of other canals.

The two canals were officially inaugurated on Monday after re-excavation work. Local MP Prof Pran Gopal Dutta inaugurated the Kazipara canal in Garamara area of Chandina. Meanwhile, BADC Chairman Additional Secretary AFM Hayatullah, BADC Member Director (Micro Irrigation) Joint Secretary Amirul Islam, BADC (Micro Irrigation) Chief Engineer Abdul Karim, BADC Comilla Chandpur, Brakshanbaria District Irrigation Area Development Project Supervising Engineer and Project Director Engineer Rahman. Was present. Earlier, the guests inaugurated the BADC training center at Chandina Upazila Sadar.

In his response, Professor Pran Gopal Dutt said, ‘Bangabandhu was not just a politician. He was a multidimensional philosopher. So he wanted to build the country through agriculture and cooperatives. But we didn't give him that time. His daughter Hon'ble Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is a compassionate man. BADC is implementing his work’.

Meanwhile, BADC chairman AFM Hayatullah inaugurated the re-excavation work of Kanail canal at Gholpasha union of Chauddagram upazila on Monday afternoon.

BADC Comilla Supervising Engineer and Project Director Engineer Mizanur Rahman said, ‘The BADC Irrigation Department is working in Comilla in consultation with Hon'ble Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Agriculture Minister, MP and BADC Chairman and others. We have spent about 63 lakh taka in two canals of two upazilas. It is hoped that digging two canals will further increase crop production in the area’.

BADC chairman AFM Hayatullah said, ‘Bangabandhu gave the first budget of the country of Tk 6 crore. From there he has allocated Tk 101 crore for agriculture. Hon'ble Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has continued that compassion towards agriculture. Re-excavation work of two canals was inaugurated in Chandina and Chauddagram upazilas. It will eliminate waterlogging and develop agriculture’.
